Deutsch: Die originale Blasonierung von 1908 lautet:„Halbrundschild auf grünem Grund, darin in Gold (Gelb): Ansteigende Ringmauer, vorn in der Mitte mit offenem rundbogigem und bedachtem Portal, darin ein stehender goldener (gelber) Schlüssel nach (heraldisch) rechts gewendet. Über der Ringmauer: Stadtabbreviatur mit befenstertem spitzbedachtem, in einem Kreuz endenden Mittelturm, flankiert von zwei befensterten, haubenbedachten Türmen. Auf dem Schild: ockerfarbene Krone aus zweistufiger Zinnenmauer und drei befensterten, gleich hohen Türmen, in der Mitte mit geschlossenem rundbogigem Tor in Gold (Gelb)."

Deutsch: Das von Adolf Matthias Hildebrandt entworfene Wappen wurde der Stadt am 3. Juni 1908 von Kaiser Wilhelm II. in seiner Eigenschaft als König von Preußen anlässlich der feierlichen Einweihung des neuen Rathauses verliehen. Das Wappen entspricht dem Bild des ältesten seit 1253 belegten Hauptsiegels.
