I'm Trizek (WMF). I work as a community relations specialist for the Wikimedia Foundation. I'm here to share a message from the Growth team.

As you may already know, the Growth team's goal is to create features that would help newcomers. Our goal is to help newcomers when they edit for the first time and also to increase the retention of new editors. Several wikis already have these features since a long time now. Working with these wikis, the Growth team found evidence of the efficiency of these new features.

These features will be available for all new accounts on your Wikipedia starting on June 23. For now, you can test them.

Which features?

The newcomer homepage (here on Portuguese Wikipedia, displayed in English)

We have created several features to help them, and also to help community members who help them :

• Newcomer homepage: a new special page, the best place for a newcomer to get started. Please visit it at Special:Homepage It includes:
  • Newcomer tasks: a feed of task suggestions that help newcomers learn to edit. Newcomers have been making productive edits through this feed! Know more about this tool.
  • Mentorship module [optional]: each newcomers has a direct link to an experienced user (see below). This way, they can ask questions about editing Wikipedia, less the need to find where to ask for assistance.
  • Impact module: the user sees how many pages views articles they edit received. Have a look at Special:Impact for yours!
• Help panel: a platform to provide resources to newcomers while they are editing. If they do some suggested tasks, they are guided step-by-step on the process of editing.
• Welcome Survey: communities can know why newcomers create an account on Wikipedia. You can see it at Special:WelcomeSurvey.

The features available right now in your preferences (here and there) so that you can try them. They are not yet visible to newcomers.

How to help?

First, we need help to translate the interface. At the moment, most of the messages newcomers will see on your Wikipedia are in English, some of them have been translated using machine translation. Please help translate the interface (done on translatewiki.net. It needs a specific account).

Also, I need your help checking on the configuration the team setups as default. Please try the features and let us know if something questions you.

Almost everything we use is listed on the features' configuration page: Special:EditGrowthConfig. Some translations are also covered there. You can also change the templates and the help links defined there. Several templates can be added for the same task.

It you are familiar with Phabricator, here is the ticket about this deployment.

If you wish to, you can create a list of mentors. This will activate the optional Mentorship module. Please format the list following the guidance. You need at least one mentor for each 500 new accounts created monthly on your wiki (3 mentors minimum). Are you hesitant to become a mentor? Please check the resources we have written based on other mentors' experiences. Please tell us if you are interested by creating a mentor list!

I briefly tested the interface and it seems okay. It kept giving me sport biografy suggestions eventhough I did not check sports but did check biography. LGBTQ is also missing among the topics (and it is very underdeveloped here).--Jetam2 (diskusia) 19:24, 9. jún 2021 (UTC)

I had 200 recommendations and I checked 100 of those and only 8 were of the easy kind. Not sure of what the ratio is for other users but I would suggest something closer to 40%.

I added the mentor page to Special:EditGrowthConfig. As an admin, you can edit it as well. Any new account will have you as a mentor. We advise wikis to have at least 3 mentors.

Regarding suggested edits, the list of topics has been defined for all wikis. We are considering to add more topics, and LGBTQ+ articles are high on our list.

Also, Suggested edits topics aren't exclusive. If you select "biographies" and "sport", you will get articles about biographies, or about sport, or, if exists, biography+sport.

Regarding the only 8 easy tasks, which kind of task have you selected? Only easy ones? Or all of them?

Right, so articles belong to more than one category.

Nadácia Wikimedia bude testovať prepínanie medzi prvým a sekundárnym dátovým centrom. To zaistí, že Wikipedia a ďalšie Wikimedia stránky zostanú online aj v prípade katastrofy. Aby sme sa uistili, že všetko funguje, technické oddelenie Wikimedie potrebuje vykonať naplánovaný test. Tento test ukáže, či dokážu spoľahlivo prepnúť s jedného dátového centra do druhého. Na riešenie akýchkoľvek neočakávaných problémov a na prípravu testu je potrebných mnoho tímov.

Kvôli istým obmedzeniam v MediaWiki sa žial musia všetky editácie počas prepínania zastaviť. Ospravedlňujeme sa za túto nepríjemnosť a pracujeme na tom, aby sme ju v budúcnosti minimalizovali.

Na krátku dobu budete môcť všetky wiki čítať, nie však upravovať.

• V utorok 29. júna 2021 Vám nemusí byť funkčné upravovanie v trvaní do 1 hodiny. Test sa začne o 16:00 CEST (14:00 UTC).
• Ak sa počas tejto doby pokúsite upravovať alebo úpravy ukladať, zobrazí sa vám hlásenie o chybe. Dúfame, že počas týchto minút nedôjde k strate žiadnych editácií, nemôžeme to však zaručiť. Ak uvidíte hlásene o chybe, počkajte prosím kým sa všetko nevráti do normálu. Potom by ste mali byť schopný uložiť svoje úpravy. Doporučujeme však, aby ste si najskôr urobili kópiu vašich úprav, len pre istotu.

Ďalšie dôsledky:

• Úlohy na pozadí budú pomalšie a niektoré môžu byť vynechané. Červené odkazy sa môžu aktualizovať pomalšie než zvyčajne. Ak vytvoríte článok, ktorý má už odkaz niekde inde, odkaz zostane červený dlhšie než zvyčajne. Niektoré dlho bežiace skripty budú musieť byť zastavené.
• Kódovania budú v týždni 28. júna 2020 zmrazené. Nedôjde k nasadzovaniu nepotrebných kódov.

V prípade potreby môže byť tento projekt odložený. Môžete si prečítať rozpis na wikitech.wikimedia.org. Akékoľvek zmeny budú oznámené v rozpise. O tejto udalosti bude viacej oznámení. Na všetkých wiki bude pred uskutočnením tejto operácie zobrazený banner. Prosím zdieľajte tieto informácie so svojou komunitou.

Výzva pre kandidátov Návrhového výboru Charty hnutia

Stratégia hnutia vyhlasuje Výzvu pre kandidátov Návrhového výboru Charty hnutia. Výzva začína 2. augusta 2021 and končí 1. septembra 2021.

Očakáva sa, že výbor bude zastupovať rozmanitosť v hnutí. Rozmanitosť zahŕňa pohlavie, jazyk, geografiu a skúsenosti. Zahŕňa to účasť na projektoch, pobočkách a nadácii Wikimedia Foundation.

Na to, aby ste sa stali členom, nie je potrebná plynulá angličtina. V prípade potreby je k dispozícii podpora prostredníctvom prekladu a tlmočenia. Členovia dostanú príspevok na kompenzáciu nákladov na účasť. Na Každé dve mesiace je to 100 USD.

Hľadáme ľudí, ktorí majú niektoré zručnosti z nasledujúcich:

• Vedieť písať spoločne. (preukázateľné skúsenosti sú výhodou)
• Ste pripravený hľadať kompromisy.
• Zameraný ste na inklúziu a rozmanitosť.
• Majte znalosti o komunitných konzultáciách.
• Máte skúsenosti s medzikultúrnou komunikáciou.
• Majú skúsenosti so správou alebo organizáciou v neziskových organizáciách alebo komunitách.
• Máte skúsenosti s vyjednávaním s rôznymi stranami.

Očakáva sa, že výbor začne s 15 ľuďmi. Ak bude 20 a viac kandidátov, prebehne kombináciou volieb a selektovania. Ak ich bude 19 kandidátov alebo menej, prebehne proces výberu bez volieb.

Delay of the 2021 Board of Trustees election

Hello,

We are reaching out to you today regarding the 2021 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election. This election was due to open on August 4th. Due to some technical issues with SecurePoll, the election must be delayed by two weeks. This means we plan to launch the election on August 18th, which is the day after Wikimania concludes.

New Wikipedia Library collections and design update (August 2021)

Hello Wikimedians!

The TWL OWL says log in today!

The Wikipedia Library is pleased to announce the addition of new collections, alongside a new interface design. New collections include:

• Cabells – Scholarly and predatory journal database
• Taaghche - Persian language e-books
• Merkur, Musik & Ästhetik, and Psychologie, Psychotherapie, Psychoanalyse - German language magazines and journals published by Klett-Cotta
• Art Archiv, Capital, Geo, Geo Epoche, and Stern - German language newspapers and magazines published by Gruner + Jahr

Additionally, De Gruyter and Nomos have been centralised from their previous on-wiki signup location on the German Wikipedia. Many other collections are freely available by simply logging in to The Wikipedia Library with your Wikimedia login!

We are also excited to announce that the first version of a new design for My Library was deployed this week. We will be iterating on this design with more features over the coming weeks. Read more on the project page on Meta.

Lastly, an Echo notification will begin rolling out soon to notify eligible editors about the library (T132084). If you can translate the notification please do so at TranslateWiki!

Wikimedia Board of Trustees Election 2021 - Update

Hello; A while ago the elections for the Board of Trustees started and the final days are running: next Tuesday the elections will end. Nineteen candidates from all over the world have stood for election.

And how is it going? As of today, August 28, 5,294 voters had cast their ballots -about double the number of voters in 2017 elections at the same time, which is a solid increase, even if the number of eligible voters was larger this year (2021: 67,838 / 2017: 56,081).

However, on the tenth day, the number of voters from the Slovak Wikipedia is 3out of 93 eligible voters. There is still a chance to increase the percentage (3.2%) in the 3 remaining days. Any vote can make a difference; let’s select the candidates who would best support the board of trustees. doufáme, že se vám během této náročné doby dobře daří a jste v pořádku! Chtěli jsme vám jenom sdělit novinku týkající se změny v Průzkumu přání komunity 2022. A chtěli bychom také znát váš názor.

Shrnutí:

Průzkum přání komunity 2022 budeme pořádat v lednu 2022. Na splnění přání pro rok 2021 potřebujeme víc času a také potřebujeme čas na přípravu několika změn v průzkumu pro rok 2022. Mezitím můžete používat pískoviště určené pro vaše první nápady na přání pro rok 2022.

Průzkum přání komunity 2022 se uskuteční v lednu (v januári)

Shrnutí:

Průzkum přání komunity 2022 budeme pořádat v lednu (januári) 2022. Na splnění přání pro rok 2021 potřebujeme víc času a také potřebujeme čas na přípravu několika změn v průzkumu pro rok 2022. Mezitím můžete používat pískoviště určené pro vaše první nápady na přání pro rok 2022.

Navrhování a plnění přání proběhne v tom samém roce

V minulosti pořádal tým Community Tech průzkum přání komunity pro následující rok v listopadu (novembru) předchozího roku. Například průzkum pro rok 2021 probíhal v listopadu (novembru) 2020. To před několika lety fungovalo dobře, tehdy jsme na přáních začínali pracovat krátce po zveřejnění výsledků hlasování.

Nicméně v roce 2021 došlo ke zpoždění mezi hlasováním a dobou, kdy jsme mohli začínat pracovat na nových přáních. Do července (júla) 2021 jsme pracovali na přáních z průzkumu pro rok 2020.

Doufáme, že konání průzkumu pro rok 2022 v lednu (januári) 2022 bude intuitivnější. Díky tomu budeme mít čas splnit víc přání z průzkumu pro rok 2021.

Podpora širší účasti dříve vyloučených komunit

Přemýšlíme, jak bychom zjednodušili účast v průzkumu. Chceme více podporovat překládání a podpořit v aktivitě méně podporované komunity. Na tyto změny bychom si rádi vzali nějaký čas.

Nový prostor pro diskusi s námi o prioritách a zatím nesplněných přáních

Bude to 365 dní bez průzkumu. Chceme, abyste se nám ozvali. Doufáme, že vás uslyšíme na diskusní stránce, ale také že vás uvidíme na našich Talk to Us setkáních! Ta se budou konat ve dvou různých časech, aby měla příležitost všechna časová pásma na světě.

Naše první setkání začne 16. septembra o 01:00 CEST (15. září ve 23:00 UTC). Další podrobnosti o agendě a formátu brzy budou oznámeny!

Brainstorming a koncepty návrhů před návrhovou fází

Pokud už teď máte nápady na přání, můžete použít nové pískoviště průzkumu přání komunity. Díky němu na ně do ledna 2022 nezapomenete. Ke svým nápadům se budete moct vracet a vylepšovat je. Mějte na paměti, že editace pískoviště se nepočítají jako přání!
