English: A U.S. Navy Vought F4U-1A Corsair (BuNo 55995) of Fighting Squadron 17 (VF-17) "Jolly Rogers" in the Southwest Pacific, in flight over Bougainville. This plane was the second Corsair flown by ace Ira C. Kepford. The photo was possibly taken over Bougainville in early March 1944, at the end of VF-17's Solomons combat tour, although the photo is dated 15 April 1944. |
