n town, when many, morequaint and historically interesting, are to be foundnearer home ? We saw what was to be seen in the morning,and spent the afternoon, in low spirits, resting inthe shade of willow-trees, whence we could watchsome nearly naked sunlit soldiers wash their horsesin a muddy stream. Our next journey was to Kolosvar, now thecapital of the country which we call Transylvania,after its Latin name. Hungarians call it Erdely ;Germans, Siebenblirgen. In the earliest times of which there are recordsTransylvania formed part of the kingdom of Dacia.Next it was a Roman province (a.d. 105-274).From that date it appears to have been a sort ofno-mans-land—until the end of the eleventhcentury—where Magyars, Huns, Goths, etc.,wandered and strove. It was conquered by KingLadislas I. (1078-1095), and united to Hungary. King Geisa II. (1141-1162), to populate theland, invited settlers from Central Germany, whohave ever since been called Saxons. Mongols and Turks ravaged the country atintervals from 1240 till 1420. Hunyadi Janos, who died in 1465, was successfulin uniting the various nationalities in a spirit ofcommon patriotism. After the great defeat of the Hungarians by theTurks at Mohacs, 1526, Transylvania became anautonomous State, under the sovereignty of Turkey.Among its elected Princes Bethlen Gabor was themost conspicuous. At the peace of Karlowitz, 1699, the Turksresigned their sovereign rights, and the EmperorLeopold I. established religious equality. TheSaxons were for the most part Lutherans; theMagyars and Szeklers, Catholics, Unitarians, orCalvinists. Rakdczy led a rebellion (1704-1710), which wasunsuccessful, and Maria Theresa made the countryinto an Archduchy. In 1867 Transylvania was finally united toHungary. It forms the south-
